The buildings demolished were
late 18th century limestone dwellings that had in recent years been commercial
premises but of late had fallen into disrepair. Although not in perfect condition
they could and should have been saved, it was simple short minded greed the
led the owners to destroy this part of their own heritage. A Sunday morning
was chosen it seems because there would be less chance of any officials being
contacted and an attempt to stop the bulldozers progress.
It would seem unlikely that planning permission will now be granted for any
'out of character' building scheme that the owners have in mind, and the
mound of rubble that now is Ogle Street will remain there for the foreseeable
future.
